Of Happy Rest

Collection: Of Happy Rest

This collection has been in the works since March 2020, and I'm so excited to finally be able to share it: eight pieces celebrating and praising God for His forgiveness, presence, and joy—all of which are as deep and expansive as the oceans.

The oceans, seas, and water have so much symbolism in the Bible, and they're often used to help describe a concept or truth. Personally, the depth and continuity of water is most striking—and isn't that the same about our God? He, too, is without any visible end or beginning, and He, too, is always flowing and moving in our lives.

When I visited the Art Institute of Chicago, there was one distinct painting that was imprinted in my memory: it was a ship surrounded by waves within a stormy setting. The colors were dark, rich, and contrasting—what little light that was present in a storm was obvious in the midst of the deep blue waves and gray clouds. This ship was being tossed to and fro with no shore in sight.

Exactly how I felt like my life was happening in that moment.

How often do I still feel like that today: that there are pressures and responsibilities moving me around like the waves and the winds? That I'm constantly spinning with tasks, events, and emotions as if I’m pouring out water from my ship with no relief in sight? That I’m isolated and alone in this monstrous storm with no else around to help steer the ship, provide cover, or paddle when my arms are tired?

Praise God that He's the light in the storm. He's the anchor keeping the ship stable. He's the peace amidst the gales. He’s the One keeping us afloat, steering us to shore, and telling us to rest in the hull of the ship.
